rise if you're sleeping, stay awakewe are young supernovas and the heat's about to break
rookjaw yawned and fluffed out his thick black fur, surveying the pines that stretched high above him. it was unseasonably warm for new leaf, which apparently was concerning for other members of his clan. hot weather this early on might signal a drought come greenleaf. he didn't mind so much just now. the warm sun on his back felt good. it almost made the big tom sleepy- a rarity considering the stubborn insomnia that plagued him nearly every night.
as usual he had volunteered for moonhigh patrol the night before, his favorite time to walk the territory. when the big tom had returned to camp just as dawn was touching the sky, he'd bedded down for a short nap. the peaceful moment lasted a fraction of the time his clanmates slept- a true "catnap." soon he was up and looking for something to eat, just a bit before the sun was fully above the mountains and radiating light down into the camp.
it was closer to midday now, and thus rookjaw was padding lazily through the woods. every now and then, big paws caused a dead blade of grass or leaf to crackle underfoot, no doubt alerting prey nearby to his passage. the warrior wasn't exactly light on his feet. well, he wasn't exactly light. period. rookjaw had been the biggest of his litter, and now was one of the more weighty of shadowclan's warriors, having grown into his big frame but not quite into his six toed paws.
as he moved onward, yellow eyes failed to inspect the lumpy, cleverly disguised amphibian just near his approaching feet. as the frog croaked in surprise and leaped out of his way, rookjaw sputtered a bit in surprise as well. he reacted quickly however, using powerful haunches to launch himself after the croaking thing, springing upon it viciously and sinking his teeth into the clammy flesh. it tried to scramble away but he pinned it between his paws and finished it off. rookjaw wasn't much of a hunter, so it was sort of pleasing that prey had, well, simply leaped right into his path, ready for the taking. at least he'd have something to take back to make up for the crow he'd put away with ravenous hunger just hours earlier.
